It all started with a $160 buy-in World Series of Poker satellite. Greg Raymer’s victory allowed him to enter the main event of the world championships and become an unforgettable poker professional. His world championship title made him become the man known as Fossilman, based on his hobby of collecting fossils – and perhaps the strange, holographic lizard-eye glasses he’s wearing. His life story begins in North Dakota, USA, where he was raised and educated. His poker career started out in college where he would constantly play nickel-dime poker (small stake games). By then, poker was nothing but a small hobby to Greg, who later moved on to black jack after improving his card-counting skills. After some time, he realized that there were other ways of making money without putting yourself at such great risk. Instead, he started playing Omaha and Texas Hold’em games at medium stakes, which later became higher and higher stake games as he made progress. Greg explained that books on poker made him take the first, major steps forward. In 1999 Greg moved to Connecticut. He was happy to find out that Foxwoods provided for plenty of real life poker tournaments. As he collected more money he also started taking serious approaches towards becoming a professional. Greg started playing cash games besides tournaments and beat the competition regularly. In the meantime, Greg was an accountant employed by a pharmaceutical company. Being financially secured helped him from feeling insecure about any potential loss. His interest in poker did, however, grow more and more into a full time job as Greg realized that online poker room gaming was a lucrative business for the best players. He first started out playing at various rooms before he settled with his favourite, PokerStars. Back then, Greg would go to work, spend some time with his family and play some poker before he would go to bed. A year after moving to Connecticut, Raymer joined the World Poker Tour and got to the final table. This was his first, major attempt at a large poker tournament. He settled with a third place and got some $50,000 richer, but described this as a huge, mental loss. Greg described the situation as “It felt like the time I got nailed in the stomach playing in a doubles racquetball tournament in high school. At first you think you're okay, and then a couple of seconds later you're doubling over in pain. I guess there's always next year.” Four years later, in 2004, Greg went for the big bucks in an attempt to challenge 2,575 players at the main event of World Series of Poker 2004. Many prominent players participated. Greg had to battle Dan Harrington, Marcel Luske, William Erickson, Chris Ferguson, Doyle Brunson, Gus Hansen among others. Back then, Greg Raymer was unknown to most players who were seated at the tables, but a week after the tournament had started, Greg was pronounced a winner after beating David Williams, Josh Arieh, Dan Harrington and other finalists. When reporters asked him about the victory, he told the world that he still had a lot to learn about poker. Winning the World Series of Poker immediately grants you the world champion title, but Greg repeatedly said that he was not the best player in the world. When asked why he though he had won the tournament, he replied, “normally, it would be difficult to play your best for a solid week. However, for some unknown reason, I was very calm and focused all week long, and made very few plays that I thought were mistakes at the time the decision was made. […] I wish I knew why I kept my mental processes so even, so I could ensure to repeat it every tournament.” |
